Meta Platforms (META 1.06%) released Muse Spark, the first large language model from its Superintelligence Lab, earlier this month. This is the best Meta has to show for its massive AI spending, which includes a $14 billion investment in Scale AI and the hiring of its Alexander Wang, billions spent on additional personnel, and massive amounts of capital expenditures for new data centers. When compared to leading frontier models, Muse Spark still isn’t ranked as good as those from OpenAI, Anthropic, or Alphabet’s (GOOGL 0.15%) (GOOG 0.29%) Google.
That might lead some investors to think the market was right to sell off shares of the social media company when it announced plans to spend as much as $135 billion on capital expenditures this year. That’s up from $72 billion a year ago.
