U.S. President Donald Trump said he has given final approval to new rules that sharply relax vehicle fuel economy standards, effectively gutting requirements the Biden administration had tightened to accelerate the spread of electric vehicles.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social on the 26th, Trump called it a historic day for both autoworkers and consumers, and said he had approved new fuel economy standards that eliminate what he described as an unreasonable electric vehicle mandate.
He said the move would strip inflated costs out of vehicle production, bringing down car prices and saving buyers thousands of dollars per vehicle. Fuel economy rules under the Biden administration, he said, forced U.S. automakers to absorb enormous losses.
