A friend of mine has been job hunting for a while now. He isn’t the kind of candidate you’d worry about—he’s good at what he does, genuinely well-liked, the type whose references pick up on the first ring and then talk about him for twenty minutes. He ran the playbook exactly as written. He reconnected with old colleagues, worked every relationship he had, and lined up people who were glad to vouch for him. And still: nothing.
