The City Council could vote this week on a proposed ordinance to extend a development ban near English Turn for another six months, as the neighborhood continues to rail against a controversial multi-family housing development proposed for the area.
The 278-unit apartment complex in Algiers has faced intense opposition from English Turn residents, who claim that their remote corner of the city doesn’t have adequate roads, drainage and city services to accommodate the new residents.
Council member Freddie King, who represents the area and lives in the gated subdivision, filed the ordinance last month. If approved, it would extend a building moratorium passed last year — which is set to expire in mid-March— for another 180 days. The measure could go before the council as soon as Thursday.
