SUPERIOR, Wis. (Northern News Now) – Wisconsin’s governor celebrated investments in higher education during a stop in Superior Wednesday.
It was part of Gov. Tony Evers’ statewide back-to-school tour over the past couple weeks.
On the UWS campus, Evers, a Democrat and former teacher, highlighted his work to secure the largest increase for the UW System in nearly two decades, with a $250 million investment over the next two years.
That includes funding to recruit and retain faculty and staff in high demand subject areas, and nearly $90 million to increase wages for workers.
“Giving them a small raise is, I think, important. The last thing we want is a very good teacher leaving Superior, Madison or any of the other campuses deciding they can go to Illinois, Iowa,” Evers said.
Evers is not seeking re-election and will be leaving office in January.
