NEAR WEST SIDE — The city is investing $40 million to improve seven shelters for people experiencing homelessness, including updating some facilities with air conditioning and single rooms and making more than 750 permanent beds at the shelters “fully accessible,” Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Wednesday.
Johnson called it the largest shelter capital investment in city history as officials continue to look to solve the city’s homelessness and housing crisis.
The funding is part of the Department of Family and Support Services Shelter Infrastructure Initiative, which is dedicated to increasing non-congregate shelter space, increasing facilities’ compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and sustaining shelter bed capacities across the city’s network of over 5,000 beds and 45 facilities.
