DURHAM (WGME) — As Mainers begin lining up firewood for the winter, a Durham business is warning customers about a Facebook scam that used its name and online reputation to make a fake listing appear legitimate.
Reed’s Firewood has been serving customers for 41 years, and owner Tracy Reed says the family business has built its reputation on relationships.
“We have thousands of customers, and we do firewood year-round, so we see folks in all seasons of their need for heating,” Reed said. “I know a lot of customers by the sound of their voice.”
That familiarity recently helped expose this new scam.
Reed says at least three people called the business in recent weeks after trying to order firewood through a page on Facebook Marketplace. Reed’s Firewood does not have a Facebook page and does not take orders through social media.
